NATIONAL CHAPTER FUNCTION
![]()

The national chapter establishes the guidelines for ESA membership.
The national chapter charters chapters, coordinates information about chapters for prospective members, and provides information on starting a chapter to interested groups.
Each local chapter is self-governed and establishes its own by-laws and rules for membership.
ESA's National Office is not involved in the
day-to-day function of
the chapters and is not liable for the actions of individual chapters or
members.
HISTORY

Eta Sigma Alpha is the first honor society established exclusively for
homeschooled students. Founded in 1999 by Joanne E. Juren, M.Ed., Executive
Director of the Home Education Partnership of Texas, it has grown into a
national organization.
As a former public school administrator, Juren contacted the National Honor
Society with the intent of forming a homeschool chapter for her sons and others
in a local support group in 1997. When told that NHS did not accept homeschool
students, Juren decided to start a new honor society for homeschoolers. Over the
next two years, the idea for Eta Sigma Alpha was refined and the "Alpha" chapter
was started in 1999 through the Home Education Partnership of Texas. Barbara
Gorman served as the first lead sponsor along with Joanne Juren and Terry Arnold
as co-sponsors.
ETA SIGMA ALPHA

History of the name
Eta, the Greek letter that is shaped like an “h” and Sigma, the letter for “s”
were chosen, along with Alpha,
the first letter of the Greek alphabet to create the name of Eta Sigma Alpha.
Eta Sigma Alpha means the “first home school” honor society.
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

There are now two different types of ESA memberships.
Join a chapter. A
complete list of chapters is available at the bottom of this webpage.
Apply with the chapter in your area.
To create a new chapter, download the Chapter Application.
Join the Omega Chapter. This is a national chapter for those students who do not have a local chapter to join. Specific information on how to join this chapter is included with the application. Complete the form and mail it in with your membership fee.
Mandatory Requirement for ESA membership:
A test score of 1800 (SAT) or 26 (ACT) or 180 (PSAT) or a 90% on the composite/complete battery on the CAT, IOWA or Stanford nationally normed standardized achievement tests is required for ESA membership.
Test scores should not be more than 1 year old.
All tests must be administered in a group setting. Parent administered tests are not acceptable.
Additional Requirements as established by each individual chapter
may
include requirements such as:
3.5 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale. (This GPA may include the parent transcript, early admission college courses, co-op or support group homeschool class grades, or similar coursework supervised/directed by the homeschooling parent.)
Essay written by applicant
Statement of faith; membership in a certain organization such as a state, regional, or local homeschool group; co-op; or sponsoring organization
Attendance, service, participation guidelines - We do recommend that chapters have meetings, but the chapter may determine how often.
Other requirements established by the By-laws of each local chapter
Letters of recommendation
Chapters should have two deep leadership which means a minimum of two sponsors,
not from the same family.
We also recommend that chapters have a minimum of five eligible students to
start a chapter. By-laws are to be developed by the students and made available
to prospective members. Chapters must hold meetings. We do not
charter chapters which do NOT meet. The meetings may be monthly,
quarterly, or even weekly, but chapters must hold meetings.
Please Note: ESA is limited to home school students; this is the only limitation we have. Anyone who is interested may apply for a chapter. Support groups, co-ops, church groups, or other interested parties may apply for a charter. Individual chapters do have the right to establish their own membership guidelines to be compatible with the organization that sponsors it. We are friendly to people of all faiths and political persuasions! We do reserve the right to locate chapters so that they do not compete with one another for students.
Homeschool Eligibility - Only those students who meet the HSLDA definition of a home schooler are eligible for ESA membership. This rule states that a student must complete 50% of his/her studies at home under the direct supervision of the parent. Co-op programs, group classes, and even community college courses are acceptable as long as the 50% rule is followed. Students enrolled in public school programs, charter school programs, full-time college programs, or other programs where more than 50% of the school time is spent in the supervision of a school setting or where the public school receives 50% funding for the student's attendance or where the public school system, umbrella school, on-line school assigns the grades without parent participation, are not eligible for ESA membership. (See HSLDA's webpage at www.hslda.org for more information.)
HOW TO APPLY FOR A CHAPTER CHARTER

NEWS Update, August, 2010
Greetings to All of our ESA Chapters and Members,
I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer. As you begin to make plans for the fall, please continue to pass along word about ESA to your friends. We are pleased to announce that Houston Baptist University has established a $1000 scholarship for ESA members and a $1000 scholarship for NCFCA National Tournament Top 10 finishers. If interested, contact the University for more information.
Thanks to all of the chapter sponsors who have mailed in updated information about your chapters. We appreciate this. Our new OMEGA chapter is really taking off. We are so glad to be able to serve those students who live in areas not serviced by a local chapter.
The new OMEGA chapter, a national chapter for those students who do not have a local chapter near their home to join, is up and running. Individuals across the nation may belong to this chapter. Once admitted, students will pay individual dues of $40 per year and submit 10 hours of community service per year. Students will receive a certificate of membership and a membership card, and will be eligible to purchase an ESA diploma, honor shawl, and honor cord. Thanks to Sharon Powell for coordinating this endeavor! The application is now on the webpage!
We are pleased to announce that we now have now chartered 268 chapters in 42 states! Welcome to our newest chapters:
Alpha Nu Chapter - MArCH (North TX) McKinney Area Christian Homeschool Honor Society, McKinney, TX
Omega Mu Chapter - Greater Jacksonville, FL
Beta Nu Chapter - Spring Hill, TN
Gamma Nu Chapter - Mt. Juliet, TN
Delta Nu Chapter - New Braunsfels and Comal County, TX

FAQ's

Is the test score the only membership requirement?
When ESA was formed in 1999, we decided to require just the test score as the one mandatory national membership requirement. After all, a test score in the 90% or an 1800 on the SAT was an honorable score. We did not choose to require a certain GPA because "parents give the grades" when a student is home schooled and we wanted to avoid the appearance of students being admitted to ESA with inflated grades given by their parents.
How often does a student need to submit a new test score?
In the Alpha Chapter, we admit students on the first score submitted and then DO NOT REQUIRE any new testing. Once in, they are in. Chapters may require students to submit new scores each year. If so, this requirement will need to be in the chapter's by-laws. The Alpha Chapter is in our 10th year and only requiring the entrance test score has worked very well. We do require students to have a 3.0 GPA in order to run for an office.
What tests may be submitted for membership?
SAT, PSAT, ACT, and the Preliminary ACT are acceptable. Stanford is accepted since it must be given to 3 or more families at the same time. IOWA or CAT will be accepted if administered in a group setting. We will no longer accept IOWA scores when the test is administered by the parent. Sponsors may have to call the testing center to confirm that the IOWA was administered in a group setting and not by the parent, or otherwise verify the group testing requirement.
Pre-ACT or Plan is not accepted due to the scoring differences of the Plan and the ACT.
MAT, Woodcock
Johnson, PASS, THETA, and COMPASS Tests are not acceptable. The test score is non-negotiable! SPONSORS ARE NOT
TO MAKE EXCEPTIONS (even for younger children). Also, the parent is NOT to administer the test.
I would suggest that the Honor Society work with a local homeschool group to provide Iowa or Stanford or CAT group testing, or have the name of a tester (non-family member) who would be willing to administer the tests to potential members.
Note: The Core total is NOT to be used; please use the composite or complete battery scores only. We cannot allow sponsors to pick and choose which scores to use. So, please use the composite/complete score results.
Does ESA's National Chapter maintain membership records?
Our first national charter representative hoped to be able to keep a national registry of all student members. This has been impossible to do as we do not have the necessary staff to keep this kind of record. We do keep a registry of all chapters and the active ones are posted to this webpage.
We will however, keep a list of the Omega Chapter members since it is a chapter of ESA.
Does ESA's National Chapter provide by-laws for chapters?
As homeschoolers, we wanted to be "home school friendly" and allow each individual chapter to establish its own by-laws. The Alpha Chapter gladly shares its by-laws upon request.
Are weekly meetings required?
Some chapters cover an entire state and weekly or even monthly meetings may be impossible. It is our hope that each chapter will hold meetings on a regular basis as it is one of the goals of the honor society for students to hold offices and learn to work together to promote common goals. Our Alpha Chapter meets the third Friday of each month. We have service projects and activities at other times during the months. One year we did meet twice a month, but because so many of students have to drive in for the meetings, we decided to return to the once a month schedule. This has worked well for us for the last eight years.
Who is eligible for ESA membership?
Only those students who meet the HSLDA definition of a home schooler are eligible for ESA membership. This rule states that a student must complete 50% of his/her studies at home under the direct supervision of the parent. Co-op programs, group classes, and even community college courses are acceptable as long as the 50% rule is followed. Students enrolled in public school programs, charter school programs, full-time college programs, or other programs where more than 50% of the school time is spent in the supervision of a school setting or where the public school receives 50% funding for the student's attendance are not eligible for ESA membership. (See HSLDA's webpage at www.hslda.org for more information.)
Can ESA Chapters hold fund raisers?
This decision must be made by each local chapter and its sponsoring group. Our Alpha Chapter has had many fund raisers since its inception. Much of our fund-raising money has been donated to the San Jacinto Foundation which sponsors a scholarship dedicated to the memory of Laura Kate Smither. Laura was murdered about 12 years ago and this scholarship, given annually to a home schooled student, helps to keep her memory alive.
